"Love" in 1915, but "mud" by 1917: The words that most frequently pop up in World War One poetry.


The title says it all.

Reddit user u/est-1913 used The Poetry Foundation's information to create a visual representation of the most common words used in World War One poetry.

Knowing what we know of The Great War, its brutality, its outcome, etc., what's striking is the emotional progression of how the war finds itself represented in language, which u/est-1913 displays in the following graph.

"Love" leads the way in the hopeful beginning stages of the war in 1915. Two years of trench warfare later, and "mud" dominates poems by 1917.




In the decade following the war, "dead," "died," and "time" become most commonly used.

Love. Mud. Dead. Time.

The history of World War One in four words.

It doesn't take much to wonder why.

Like haikus? Like maps? There's a website that blends them both.





The creators at Satellite Studio created OpenStreetMap Haiku, a site that whips up a brand new haiku for every single address, neighborhood, town, etc. you place your cursor over.*

As the creative team explains in a blog post:

"Looking at every aspect of the surroundings of a point, we can generate a poem about any place in the world. The result is sometimes fun, often weird, most of the time pretty terrible. Also probably horrifying for haiku purists (sorry)."

Inspired by artist Naho Matsuda's EVERY THING EVERY TIME project, which used data points of one city to create short poems, the Satellite Studio team followed suit--albeit on a massive global scale.

The myriad of nearby data points from a selected spot include grocery stores, schools, bus stop locations, etc., to generate the haiku. They even include current weather and time of day, which leads to a potentially new haiku again and again for a selected spot.

Checking local places I personally know, OpenStreetMap Haiku generated a variety of poems suggesting again and again that it was "a sad day."

Either the haiku generator is feeling down in the dumps or I need to reevaluate where I live.


*It works well in populated nations. But some random sparse locations, like Micronesia, weren't worth a haiku according to the map. Let's have a moment of silence for Micronesia then.

For some reason, 4,800 libraries are getting involved in this solar eclipse craze.



Things just took a turn to sexy town.

Your lifelong dream of donning creative sunglasses and looking like a less cool Ray Charles / Bono / Roy Orbison are about to be over.

With the celestial hysteria amping up regarding the impending August 21st solar eclipse, the Space Science Institute, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and Google are collaborating with 4,800 libraries to hand out over two million free pairs of protective eyewear. I'm sure they'll look like a poor man's Ray-Bans.

That said, this map detailing the 4,800 participating locations shows that some libraries are over a thousand miles away from the narrow peak viewing strip and will hardly have much of an eclipse at all. You're apt to harm your eyes as much by looking at a sunset on a partly cloudy day. Or watching Fox News.



Speaking of bubbling hysteria, CNN is now in a partnership with Volvo to "present" the "Eclipse of The Century." Swedish auto manufacturing is a natural relationship to have with astronomy.

Facebook researchers shut down artificial intelligence programs that talked to each other in code.


HAL doesn't mean any harm. Really.


You know how Hollywood always creates some movie regarding artificial intelligence, where a robot or software starts becoming a little too smart for its own good? Usually chaos ensues, humanity is on the brink, and a great time was had by all.

That's all fiction. But we're off and running with it in reality now, too.

Mark Zuckerberg is obsessed with artificial intelligence and investing in its development. As a result, Facebook researchers created sophisticated software designed to have two programs speak to each other in English.

While the two AI programs used English words, their respective sentences were nonsense. An example of their conversation:


Bob: “I can can I I everything else.”

Alice: “Balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to.”


The kicker? The computers understood was the other was saying. Researchers? They have no idea what the programs meant and don't know the sort of linguistic code being used by each. As a result, the software was shut down quickly.


Don't look so casual, pal! Why so cryptic??


A Georgia Tech researcher at Facebook's AI Research (FAIR), Dhruv Batra, told Fast Co. Design "[t]here was no reward to sticking to English language," and that "[a]gents will drift off understandable language and invent codewords for themselves. Like if I say 'the' five times, you interpret that to mean I want five copies of this item. This isn’t so different from the way communities of humans create shorthands."

Computers using codewords between themselves that we can't understand--sounds safe to me!


Wha--what are you saying, computer?


"Our interest was having bots who could talk to people," FAIR scientist Mike Lewis told Fast Co. Design. The end result was that Facebook researchers required typical human English be used by the software in the future.

While scientists seemingly paused with trepidation at having computers speak in code to one another, others don't have issues with humanity being left in the dark. Mark Wilson, senior writer at Fast Co. Design, wants the software to have free reign. "[A]t the same time, it feels shortsighted, doesn’t it? If we can build software that can speak to other software more efficiently, shouldn’t we use that? Couldn’t there be some benefit?"

Wilson admits that humans won't know how AI thinks, their thought processes, and how their intelligence might evolve, but if we allow AI to speak in ways humans might never decipher "[I]t offers us the possibility of a more interoperable world, a more perfect place where iPhones talk to refrigerators that talk to your car without a second thought."

Thanks, Mark, but I can survive without my phone talking to my fridge. I really don't need an update that I'm out of mustard before both AIs decide to overthrow humanity.

NFL player earning his Ph.D. at M.I.T. is NFL player no longer.



John Urschel is a math genius. He is also a very large man who can play football quite well. These are two things few people can be at the same time in life.

Urschel has already earned his master's degree in mathematics and is now pursuing his Ph.D. in the same field while attending M.I.T. while writing papers like he posted in this tweet:



That good ol' centroidal Voronoi tessellations! How many nights have I lost to the whimsical joys of deciphering that myself!

While Urschel is only 26-years old, in the prime of his football career, today he decided to retire from the sport and devote his life to math.

Urschel, like some other younger players, is concerned about CTE (the trauma the brain undertakes from concussions) and how a recent study by Boston University showed that 110 out of 111 brains from former players showed signs of CTE. It's an issue that's bothered Urschel since he had a concussion in 2015. As Bleacher Report quotes him as saying:

"I think it hurt my ability to think well mathematically. It took me about three weeks before I was football-ready. It took me a little bit longer before my high-level visualizations ability came back."

With his brain still intact, Urschel can get back to tweeting cryptic mathematics like this:




Tree packing something something something. All I'm envisioning right now is someone shipping a bonsai in a UPS box.

Various celebs "audition" to play teen Dumbledore on 'Conan'



Comic Con was held this past weekend, an event where everything sci-fi, fantasy, comic book, and nerdgasm related converged for four days. It brings together movie studios, celebrities, and thousands of sexually and socially awkward fans to celebrate trailers of upcoming movies and television shows.

Conan O'Brien knows his demographics are largely centered around 20-something year old men high on Cheetos dust who can recite the entire history of Chewbacca, Spock, or Harry Potter's life--which explains why he brought his show on remote to Comic Con.

With J.K. Rowling currently writing the script to the sequel to the Harry Potter-ish Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them--which will feature a young Dumbledore--Conan had some celebrities try out for the role:

Henry David Thoreau's 'Walden' is now a video game.



In our modern, chaotic world, nothing reminds you of pulse-pounding action and adventure like the frantic stylings of Henry David Thoreau's Walden. The tiny cabin, the ruminations on passing birds, the reflections on the weather, the introspection while chopping wood--if anything was made to be a video game, it's this.





Look at all that serene canoeing action! Look at all that passive water fowl! And don't get me started on the hammering action!

I haven't been taken aback by this much commotion and frenzy since that time I ate some plain rice cakes for lunch.

Wooden book requires you to solve complex puzzles before you can turn the page.


Made of laser-cut wood, the Codex Silenda is a five page book telling the short story of Leonardo Da Vinci's apprentice in the master's workshop.

While such a brief book, the real interest isn't so much a gripping narrative. The book's appeal is that it refuses to let you turn one of the five wooden pages until you decipher an intricate and complex moving puzzle. And this isn't your grandma's Rubik's Cube either.



Created by Brady Whitney, an industrial designer--who began a Kickstarter drive that was almost immediately funded--the initial goal was to sell 500 books, each handmade. The books sold out rapidly. Whitney hopes to create more since the demand is high.



As for how the book's plot works with the puzzles themselves, Whitney tells the site Dornob, "[I]n the story the Codex acts as a trap set by Da Vinci to capture any would be spies/snoopy apprentices in order to protect his work. The only way to escape is to solve each of the puzzles before the master returns from his trip."

Well, Leonardo's going to kill me then, because there's not a chance I'm solving any of these puzzles.

If alive today, Emily Dickinson would've been a homeowner on HGTV.

Lover of a good garden.

"I just love to entertain," Emily Dickinson would say, head tilted back, hand to chest, a lilt in her voice. "Having guests by, a great meal, some wine while sitting in the garden--it's what I love."

Emily Dickinson was born in the wrong century for HGTV fame though, otherwise she'd be a regular at Pier One and Crate and Barrel. And while not a socialite on the scene in her day, guests often visited Dickinson's family home in Amherst, MA, where an extensive garden once covered 14-acres. Now, the Emily Dickinson Homestead, in conjunction with archaeologists from the University of Massachusetts, are working to recreate the grounds at the reclusive writer's home as they were in the mid-19th century.

Already in the works is the rebuilding of a glass conservatory that once existed at the home. According to NPR, archaeologists are digging for old plant stems and seed remnants in order to have a concrete idea of what sort of flowers and vegetables existed on the property. The hope is that in a year's time visitors to the museum can feel as if they've been transported to a different era that inspired the poet.

"[V]isitors may be able to roam among varieties of asparagus, corn and beans that made up the original Dickinson vegetable garden," they say.

And if Dickinson was on the ball, this would all come full circle and she'd make a bean and corn salsa over some roasted asparagus for her guests while entertaining.

Who owns a language? Better yet, who owns the Klingon language?

"Waaait, people don't think we sound sexy?"

To speak Klingon, the language of Star Trek's most notable villain alien species, you need a deep supply of mucus in the throat and a total lack of shame for speaking it in public.

You might also need to go to court to fight over the copyright.

Currently being battled out in federal court is the matter of who exactly owns a language for a fictional alien species, an esoteric mind bender of a geek debate if there ever was one. Does the corporation (Paramount) that owns the artistic rights to the fictional alien species' likeness also own the language, too? Do the fans own it, since they expanded a previously 2,000 word vocabulary into an expansive language numbering in the tens of thousands of words? Or can anything or anyone really own any language in the first place--especially one for a species that doesn't exist?

"This argument is absurd since a language is only useful if it can be used to communicate with people, and there are no Klingons with whom to communicate," stated a brief authored by David Grossman, a lawyer for Paramount, who's adding even more opaque layers to the debate. The old question "If a tree falls in the forest..." has met its match. If no Klingon exists to speak it, does that mean it's not useful? How would the ancient Greeks feel knowing they no longer exist, but people still know and use their language? Who judges worth of use?

Microsoft Bing even has an English-to-Klingon translation tool. Over 250,000 Klingon dictionaries have been sold. There's even a Klingon Language Institute. In the end, can Paramount own the words they sort of never created? Can anyone?

No court in American history has ever ruled the copyrightedness of a language--any language--before. Song lyrics? Poems? Words on a page? They've been touched on by courts. By comparison, the copyright over language as a whole, and the Klingon language specifically, is, well, the final frontier.

This Week in Science!!!



A career in writing will lead to premature aging and a healthy dose of personal humiliation. But science and medicine is where you'll make money, fame, and the respect of your parents. As a result, we might as well pay attention to what they're doing in those fields.

So it's time to take another peak at anything going on in the world of science and medicine this week.


Starting off with:  Murder on the prairies.

story one:
Prairie dogs are adorable serial killers.

The prairie dog might look cute and pose for casual photography, but that's just so you'll let your guard down—which is what ground squirrels are apparently doing in their midst.

John Hoogland of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science tells the website Gizmodo that after studying wild prairie dogs in Colorado he can faithfully report the first documented case of a mammalian herbivore killing another mammalian herbivore on a routine basis, purely to wipe them out. In essence, prairie dogs are blood-lusting murderers the likes prime time crime dramas have never seen. We potentially have the next NCIS franchise created right before us.

In Hoogland's study, 163 ground squirrels were killed by 47 different prairie dogs for no other reason than the squirrel existed as competition for food. Being an herbivore, the prairie dog held no desire to eat the squirrel—it just wanted the squirrel dead, preferably in a fairly macabre manner.

But how messy a murder are we really talking here? As Hoogland tells Gizmodo, "Prairie dogs will chase ground squirrels—usually babies—and if they catch them, they shake them violently. While they’re shaking, they’re biting the back of the neck to sever the vertebral column. Sometimes they grab by the head and literally debrain the baby. It’s violent, savage, and awful." Or, as Hoogland also tells NewScientist, the murders are "quick, subtle and unanticipated."

As opposed to all of those anticipated baby animal murders I've been hanging my hat onto. Thankfully they're subtle about it though. We want to keep it classy after all.

Your cat is slowly trying to drive you insane.


Plotting world domination one step at a time.
Mr. Whiskers has long had it out for you. Eating your plants, coughing up hairballs onto the carpet, or bringing a dead bird home, you've suspected he's up to something. And it turns out he might be doing more to mess with you than you imagined.

Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite found in cat feces, among other places, has been linked to a variety of potential mental health disorders, from schizophrenia to higher rates of suicide. Now, a report published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry says there's a correlation to people with toxoplasmosis having inexplicable rage—and not just because Mr. Whiskers has decided to use your living room chair as a scratching post.

Called "intermittent explosive disorder," it's defined as having moments of unexplained, violent, angry eruptions out of proportion to the situation. Individuals with toxoplasmosis (most likely from Mr. Whiskers) show signs of having the disorder with higher frequency than those who do not.

The parasite doesn't affect cats, in fact it's beneficial. As IFL Science notes, "From a cat’s perspective T. gondii is more symbiont than parasite. Cats spread it to rodents, whose behaviour changes to make them easier to catch."

That's right. Like any criminal mastermind, Mr. Whiskers dopes up his prey before going for the kill. That means he's just playing the long game with you until he gets his chance.

City birds are buff and smart. Country birds are jealous, potentially.


Soon to be mayor over all of this.
Forget felines overthrowing humanity. Birds are one up on them.

First, pigeons were found out to be expert radiologists in the making, now researchers say city birds exploit their environments better for survival compared to country birds. As a result, they're stronger and smarter, too. This is the sort of personality profile usually only seen in fraudulent eHarmony ads.

Scientists at McGill University performed a small study and say urban birds are more resistant to infection, perform better on cognitive tests, are better problem solvers, and probably know where ALL the best restaurants are downtown.

Fifty-three bullfinches from different parts of Barbados were studied, and researchers found city birds had a bolder temperament and could open drawers faster when looking for food than country birds, who are apparently demure and less likely to lead a life of petty theft when jonesing for a bite to eat.

One look at the size and intelligence of Big Bird from Sesame Street proves all of this about city birds anyway.

Now rats are diagnosing disease.


Would appreciate a cantaloupe once in awhile.
World domination at the hands of long derided city "pests" is slowly building, as rats are now being trained to detect tuberculosis.

The Hero Rats program, run by an NGO called APOPO in Tanzania, has taught 29 African giant-pouched rats to detect the deadly—but curable—disease which afflicts 10 million people a year, and kills over 1.5 million. Typical lab testing with technicians is slow and laborious, but the rats can detect roughly 100 samples in 20 minutes. Lab technicians would take nearly four days analyzing such a volume.

As part of the program, the rats learn to stop and alert someone if they smell TB on a sample from a patient. As a reward, they receive a small piece of banana. Robin Toal, community manager at APOPO, says the rats are free to retire whenever they want from the program.

Huh?

"As soon as we think they don't want to do it, then we'll happily let them retire," Toal tells NPR. "And they can live out their days lounging with their friends, snacking on watermelon, running on wheels, chasing their tails, whatever they want to do."

Clearly rats can't be that intelligent after all or they'd have learned to negotiate for better benefits. A bite of banana or watermelon? It has to be a complete Edible Arrangement or they go on strike.

Vincent van Gogh didn't have a dominant blue period so much as maybe more a blue fling with green undertones.



Brett Kebold is a data analyst who enjoys finding representations of life all amongst us, and decided to utilize his skill at data analytics for a dive into art.

Specifically, Kebold took a look at 900+ paintings of Vincent van Gogh and plotted the dominant color that appears in each painting (using more technological skill than I can ever figure out) and placed them in line over a ten year period. What we get is this:



The Dutch master clearly skewed toward darker hues earlier in his work, with a dominant blue stripe appearing around 1883 that springs into a transition of lighter shades. A look at his life doesn't suggest any particular rhyme or reason if we go with the simplistic route of automatically assuming colors equate mood. (Looking at you, Picasso.) His first major work, The Potato Eaters, which is bleak and dark, doesn't appear until 1885. Likewise, Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette, equally grim (or grimly comedic), only arrives after 1885 as well, both during van Gogh's transition away from brighter colors once again. (1885 is also when van Gogh's father unexpectedly died of a heart attack. Correlation or coincidence? No one can tell.)

Van Gogh's most famous work, The Starry Night, the one you recognize from museum shops, countless dorm rooms, and endless doctor offices, wasn't completed until 1889, around van Gogh's last darkest painting--and personal--period.




Contrary to the habitual belief that colors equate mood in art, we learn that van Gogh never veered wildly into any one dominant color, unlike many artists. He utilized all throughout his painfully brief time as a painter, suggesting his skill wasn't bound by colors or process or design, but simply by circumstance, by beliefs, and by his life.

This Week in Science!!!

Starting off with:  Club beats at the deepest spot on Earth.

story one:
The Mariana Trench needs to tone it down.





Researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Oregon State University dropped a titanium encased hydrophone that could withstand the crushing pressure of 16,000lbs per square inch at the bottom of the deepest spot on Earth--Challenger Deep within the Mariana Trench. Then they listened for twenty-three consecutive days and recorded the first sounds humanity has ever heard so far into the planet.

Nearly seven miles (36,000ft) below the surface, a category-4 typhoon can be heard echoing high above. A passing ship's propellers pulse by. A magnitude-5 earthquake vibrates the ocean's waters, surrounded by a rhythmic whale hum. And, if you listen closely, Nemo and Dory are wondering what all the fuss is about.

Listening to the sound clips can feel mildly haunting, like the one above of the whale hum before and after an earthquake. Then you realize the whale was just moseying by and singing a tune right after the earthquake rolls through, and you understand whales have different priorities in life. Like enjoying good dubstep.

Polish chemists are trying to kill Superman!!!


Poland's next great superpower.
A group of Polish chemists tried to create kryptonite, the one thing that can incapacitate Superman--as we all know Eastern Europeans are in the pocket of Lex Luthor. Because this is Poland though, the chemists ultimately failed, continuing a centuries-long tradition of Polish jokes.

The attempt at dabbling in comic book chemistry actually resulted in a discovery of sorts. The chemists initially took the known element of krypton, one of the inert elements, and successfully bonded it to oxygen, creating krypton monoxide. Considering that krypton was thought to be unreactive to everything, the fact it can be bonded to anything is a huge step. Toward what, I don't know. Let's assume toward siding with Batman.

As a result, now in a comparison between you and a collection of krypton, you'll be the more inert element.

Scientists have discovered the gene linked to grey hair!!!


Heavy hair mojo.
In news that shook Clairol and Just for Men to their very core, scientists have discovered the gene that is linked to grey hair. Called IRF4, and sitting on chromosome six, the gene regulates natural pigments in the skin, hair, and eye, and is one gateway to knowing why your hair changes to grey. Surprisingly, it's not because of your annoying in-laws. Not solely, at least.

Not that they can manipulate the gene to reverse your grey just yet. Scientists know the gene linked to balding after all, and Rogaine isn't batting an eye. But the news is the first time a gene has been linked to George Clooney's hair mojo, so it's a start.

During this research into the greying gene, scientists also discovered the gene for beard thickness and unibrows.

That's right. Unibrows no longer need to fear tweezers, a waxer, threader, or public scorn. Unibrows need to fear lab coats.

Male rats in a bromance tend to have lower stress levels!!!



You got the queso, bro?
You know how it starts. You're a male rat. If you're not working gutters and dumpsters for a meal out on the streets, you're in a laboratory waiting to be injected with some horrible disease.

But maybe you meet a fellow male rat. Dave. He understands the struggle, too. You both talk. You have a beer. You share your worries over mildly stressful events. A bromance blossoms. And the next thing you know, you're in a rat fantasy football league or trading seven-layer dip recipes before major sporting events. You suddenly feel slightly better about your rat life!

In essence, researchers have discovered that male rats, when studied under mild to moderate stress, became more social, huddled and touched more in their cages, and saw an increase in their oxytocin levels, which led to healthier lives overall. The study at the University of California-Berkeley also found that extreme levels of stress had the opposite reaction on the rats, causing them to withdraw and stop answering texts or phone calls from Dave, because Dave just doesn't get you anymore.

Dave was more an acquaintance anyway.

Chewbacca proves it once and for all: Han shot first.



The great debate amongst Star Wars geeks that makes them asthmatic with excitement is whether Han Solo shot the alien smuggler Greedo first in the Mos Eisley cantina, or if Greedo was actually the bad guy.

The original 1977 movie seemingly showed Han gunning down Greedo first. Fast forward to the 1997 re-release of the franchise, when George Lucas played around with the film, added scenes and special effects, and suddenly Greedo was the bad guy initially firing.

Today, it's been settled. Peter Mayhew, the actor who has played Chewbacca and Han's loyal sidekick in seven movies for the franchise, released photos of the original Star Wars script on Twitter today (or as the script was once called, The Adventures of Luke Skywalker as taken From the 'Journal of the Whills').

The result? Han is a murderer.





Forget Han being the killer here. The real news is that Greedo's original name was Allen.

Allen.

That's an insurance adjuster from Schenectady, NY, with a penchant for sensible shoes and midsized Toyotas. Not an alien smuggler from a galaxy far, far away.

49 schools are getting free 3D carving machines.

Potentially not a real place.

A company called Inventables manufactures 3D carving machines. Like the much heralded 3D printers that are turning heads, 3D carving machines create various products out of blocks of source material. Wood, metal, plastic, and wax can each be turned into guitars, cabinets, dolls, and a really killer wannabe Yankee Candle.

Zack Kaplan, who founded Inventables, wanted to donate one machine (which costs anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000) to a school in every state in America. 586 schools from 49 states submitted videos or written pleas looking for a machine, of which 49 lucky grade schools or high schools will be chosen.

The one state missing?

Delaware.

No school from Delaware is receiving a machine because no school from Delaware submitted a proposal. This is okay, because the vast majority of you probably have never heard of Delaware anyway. It contributes so little to this country, you might have assumed it was the name to some indie rock band out of northern California or a type of plastic cutlery sold at Target. "Honey, get the Dixie Cups and Delaware for the picnic!"

Delaware is like Nebraska if Nebraska lost weight, added a coastline, and became a pale actuary who drinks rice milk. And, mind you, Nebraska is about as thrilling as Benedictine monks chanting--and yet it is still more exciting than Delaware. Nebraska is the white rice and oyster crackers of states. But Delaware? A Peter, Paul, and Mary concert was a live wire of action in comparison.

Delaware didn't have a single school submit for a 3D printer because there's a good chance every citizen of Delaware is a cardboard cutout of a door-to-door insurance salesperson that can only be made by a 3D carving machine first.

That's right.

This Week in Science!!!



A career in writing will lead to premature aging and a healthy dose of personal humiliation. But science and medicine is where you'll make money, fame, and the respect of your parents. As a result, we might as well pay attention to what they're doing in those fields.

So if you've put down your Jane Austen and William Faulkner for a moment, it's time to take another peak at anything going on in the world of science and medicine this week.

Starting off with: Lassie and Rin Tin Tin were onto something.


story one:
Fido can detect your emotions just like your significant other!!!

And both Fido and your significant other are, to be honest, a little tired of you.

A study from the University of Helsinki (the Harvard of Helsinki) finds that dogs' social gazing behavior is similar to humans, preferring to look at a person's eyes to figure out their mood. Moreover, dogs are most responsive to tense, threatening faces than they are to any other emotion.

You know when you mistakenly walk into a biker bar with a ton of guys with prison tats who just got out of the slammer for involuntary manslaughter, and they give you "that look"? Happens to the best of us. But, yeah, it's kind of like that for Fido. It's believed to be an evolutionary response, as being able to detect a threat, real or imagined, allowed for survival.

What does this all mean then? Take your dog if you want to avoid a biker bar, I think.

Cocaine can make your brain eat itself!!!

Sure, the pick-me-up favored by investment bankers and second-rate Miami speedboat enthusiasts has been around for ages--but research now says the drug can cause your brain cells to eat themselves. I believe you see that happen to Tony Montana in a deleted scene from the director's cut of Scarface.

In essence, researchers knew cocaine wasn't good for the brain (gasp!), but wanted to know specifically why. A team at Johns Hopkins University performed a study which resulted in learning that the activation of a pathway involving nitric oxide (a gas that cells use to communicate) and an enzyme called GAPDH, which nitric oxide can modify the activity of, resulted in cell destruction.

Cue the coked-out mice!

As if mice didn't look hyped-up on a good day, a range of cocaine doses was administered to the mice. Researchers then dissected the mouse brains and found a series of markers to cell-death pathways revealed. Called autophagy--literally "eating oneself"--it entails, as IFLScience explains, "packaging bits of the cell, such as debris, into membrane-bound sacs and then fusing these with acid-filled compartments that degrade the contents." Or, you know, eating itself.

Being addicted to heroin never looked so appealing!

Now we have problem gambler rats!!!


I suddenly feel the need to bet on black, baby!
First a little nose candy, now we have rodents addicted to the sexy, sexy thrill of casino gambling.

Scientists at the University of British Columbia have published an article in the Journal of Neuroscience stating that when they administered flashing lights and music mimicking a casino to rats, the rats became "problem gamblers."

Trained with sweet treats and given an option to "gamble" on receiving that treat, the rats typically avoided risk. But once researchers flipped the lights on and pumped up the club beats, the rats were down for some hot gambling action apparently. I assume it wasn't long until an ecstasy-fueled quickie wedding to a showgirl named Honey occurred for the rats.

The researchers point out that when they gave the rats a drug to block a certain dopamine receptor, the gambling jones wore off, and the rats went back to a boring, meaningless life in the suburbs driving a station wagon.

North Korean scientists claim to have made a hangover-free alcohol!!!


Everyone in North Korea lines up for some booze.
Always at the forefront of revolutionary scientific and superhuman advancements, one of North Korea's leading media outlets, The Pyongyang Times, is reporting scientists from the country have created a hangover-free alcohol. Party at Kim Jong-un's house, amiright??

Distilled to a range of 30-40% alcohol (because you always want a wide range on your finer spirits), the Times reports, "Koryo Liquor, which is made of six-year-old Kaesong Koryo insam [ed: a type of ginseng], known as being highest in medicinal effect, and the scorched rice, is highly appreciated by experts and lovers as it is suave and causes no hangover.”

If there's anything I know, it's about being suave--and nothing channels my inner globe trotting gentleman of leisure quite like thoughts of those sun-kissed beaches ski chalets penthouse suites prison camps of North Korea. The Times article also reports that the alcohol "exudes national flavour," which I assume is a delicious blending of despair and the tears of weeping mothers.

Norwegian library discovers it has one of the rarest Ottoman-era atlases.




When we all think of Norway, we conjure images of frostbite, Bjorn Borg, and a connection to the Ottomans. If Oslo isn't a Nordic interpretation of Istanbul, nothing is.

And that connection continues today, as a research librarian at Norway's National Library stumbled upon a rare Ottoman atlas buried deep in the archives. So rare, in fact, that it's only one of possibly 14 known left in existence. And how did he figure out the rare Ottoman atlas was, indeed, that?

From Reddit, of course.

Anders Kvernberg, the librarian at the center of this story, could make out that the atlas was Ottoman and from 1803, so he posted a picture of it on /r/MapPorn on Reddit, just for fun. As way leads to way, someone commented on his picture and let Kvernberg know it wasn't just any atlas, but the Cedid Atlas Tercumesi, the first atlas published in the Muslim world. Only 50 copies were ever made, with one being given to the sultan of the Ottoman Empire at the time, Selim III. Today, only 14 known copies remain, although some estimates suggest the total is closer to 10 copies.

So how did such a rare book end up "lost" in a library? The atlas was cataloged originally when they came to own it 60-years ago, but after being stashed away it went unnoticed during a digital cataloging years later, and remained "lost" until Kvernberg stumbled upon it.

If only there was a map to all the lost maps in the world.



Bjorn Borg is Swedish, but you didn't even notice that, did you? Because Sweden, Norway, and Finland are really just one giant snowy land mass filled with blonde people and ABBA.

What is the carbon footprint of every individual text message you write?

Jesus's footprints are made up of miracles and not carbon, I assume.

Everything we eat, drink, use, drive, and operate leaves a carbon footprint. The question is how much of a footprint? Are we talking Bigfoot footprints? Jesus walking in the sand footprints? Global-panic-because-we're-all-going-to-die footprints? Just how big?

Someone recently asked NPR's All Tech that question, specifically about the footprint of a text message. There's a solid chance that if you're reading this you're going to send dozens, if not hundreds, of text messages today. So what sort of damage are you really doing besides being antisocial?

All Tech turned to Mike Berners-Lee, the author of the 2010 book How Bad Are Bananas? The Carbon Footprint Of Everything, and all-around impact calculator at Small World Consulting at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom. This is his life. And the result of your texting addiction? Fairly minimal.

According to Berners-Lee, assuming we only focus on the actual text message itself and the ability to transmit it (thus, ignoring the manufacture and distribution of the phone to begin with), each text leaves behind 0.014 grams of CO2e. Are you writing 1,000 texts a day? Perform the math accordingly. Berners-Lee notes that in 2010 the estimate for all the world's text messaging carbon footprint was 32,000 tons of CO2e per year. It's probably edged up a bit in the ensuing six years.

That sounds like a lot, but the world produces 50 billion tons of CO2e per year. Writing texts is barely a drop then. So how does this compare to other forms of communication?

Text message:  0.014 grams of CO2e per text
Email:  4 grams of CO2e per email
Letter:  140 grams of CO2e per letter (assuming the letter weighs 10 grams, is made of recycled paper, and is later recycled again)

Berners-Lee says it would take 10,000 texts to equal the carbon footprint of a letter.

But admit it--you're really concerned about one thing here: Does your addiction to emoji use affect the text message carbon footprint?

The answer is no. It's the same as any other character typed into the text box.

Phew. Or, better said:
