2. To rumor, gossip.
Origin:
Merriam-Webster claims scuttlebutt isn't a real word, and not in the dictionary.
We all know Merriam-Webster is a damned, dirty liar.
The OED claims 1801 as the birth date for scuttlebutt, born out nautical slang describing readily available drinking water. In turn, scuttlebutt is just a slightly altered version of scuttled, a 1743 nautical term that evolved into scuttled-cask, which evolved into that 1801 scuttlebutt.
American nautical boys are to blame for turning scuttlebutt into a synonym for gossip by 1901, when the word appeared in a random column in the magazine Smoking Lamp. Because when you think linguistic creators, you think of men wearing fancy little navy hats.
In essence, scuttlebutt is the origin for the idea of water cooler talk at work.
