Super Bowl to take a one year hiatus using letters, does away with "L."

The Phoenicians called it lamedh. The Greeks call it lambda. The Latins--and the alphabet we use today--just call it L.

The National Football League? They're calling it quits, at least for one year when counting Super Bowls with Roman numerals (or, rather, letters), all because the Roman numeral for 50, when standing alone, doesn't look terribly appealing, so say the NFL's creative minds.

Jaime Weston, the NFL's vice president of brand and creative, told ESPN the thought process behind ditching the nearly half-century tradition of using letters. “When we developed the Super Bowl XL logo, that was the first time we looked at the letter L. Up until that point, we had only worked with X’s, V’s and I’s. And, at that moment, that’s when we started to wonder: What will happen when we get to 50?”

What will happen is a golden-hued numeric 50 that looks like it was stolen from the set of The Price Is Right.

"We think what we have makes a very powerful statement for the NFL brand," Weston told ESPN.

Powerfully generic and geriatric, yes.

Alex Trabek spitting hot rap lyrics during 'Jeopardy!'

It takes Trabek until the third clue before he starts feeling the rhythm in his bones, and then he's off--a rap battlin', hot rhymes MC who is quickly becoming the Fab Five Freddy of the game show set.

This is very reminiscent of that unfortunate time Bob Barker came out during the opening of The Price Is Right after Rod Roddy's death, poured a 40 in memory, and recited some Tupac. Oddly touching, really.

Jeopardy doesn't much appreciate your lack of respect for the letter E.

Two weeks ago it was a kid with a slight misspelling.

Now it's not enunciating enough on vowels to the Jeopardy! judges liking.

Contestant Fidelito Cortes answers correctly regarding a Seinfeld character name, but pronounces it "Uh-laine" as opposed to "EE-laine."

This reminds me of that time on The Price Is Right when Bob Barker kidney punched a contestant because they didn't spin the big wheel hard enough.

The Price Is Right: Bob Barker's first day as a gray haired man.

Continuing with the 40th Anniversary of The Price Is Right, we look back on Bob Barker's first day going gray.

Sure, it seems like a small thing today. But television personalities didn't go gray twenty-five years ago. They kept the brown shellac hair color going even if their face was as weathered as storm shutters on a cozy Cape Cod camp.

Wink Martindale is proof of that much.

The Price Is Right: A Bloody Mary in the AM sounds about right...

Continuing with The Price Is Right 40th anniversary celebration...

A random episode from the early days of 1972, where one pricing game has Steero Bloody Mary Cocktail Mix.

According to Announcer Johnny:
You'll enjoy it with all meals or parties.

My Eggs Benedict at 7am are always a party, my friend, let me tell you.

The Price Is Right is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Let it be known that I watched The Price Is Right religiously from about birth through college, making me a genius when it comes to knowing the actual retail price of cans of peas and lovely dinette sets.

Today The Price Is Right celebrates its 40th anniversary.

Sure, today Drew Carey is hosting it, and this is a letdown from the days of Bob Barker getting his swerve on with his Barker's Beauties. Oh, 1970's misogynism...how you're so uncomfortably delightful and awkward to watch.

So here's the very first 1972 Bob Barker Price Is Right episode. Sure, it looks like a lovely rainbow or oranges and browns threw up on your computer screen, but that theme music at every turn will get your hips swiveling.

A sharp looking muskrat fur coat is the first item up for bids. (You can't make this stuff up. It's 1972.) Then, a competitor named Connie--rocking a sweet hairdo that channels all that is fabulous about bowling balls--plays for a Chevy Vega. In case you're wondering how gorgeous a Chevy Vega looks, imagine your lungs swollen with pneumonia and lacking oxygen for a week.

That's a Chevy Vega.
