Randomness Corner: Escaped Penguin Outracing Tokyo Officials in Bid for Freedom

A defiant little penguin recently escaped the Tokyo Sea Life Park in a brazen escape plot that was in the works for an undetermined amount of time.

According to officials, a nearby zoo director saw a penguin bathing in the mouth of Kyu-Edo River--flaunting his freedom--and took the photo you see here. A polite wave or the middle finger? You decide.

The Humboldt penguin was one of 135 born at the Tokyo Sea Life Park last year. But rumors started circulating that he had begun reading Noam Chomsky and Karl Marx, developing a belief in a better life than the fascist supply of anchovies and sardines from a bucket he'd grown used to. Some have claimed he started smoking clove cigarettes during this rebellious phase, too.

Officials say the penguin display is surrounded by a six foot perimeter of inescapable netting, and are at a loss to explain his escape. The Japan Times reports, though, that small holes can be found in the netting in which stray cats have been known to gain access. These outlaw felines were probably part of an illicit smuggling syndicate which has turned to underground penguin smuggling during these hard economic times.

Tokyo Sea Life Park authorities say the penguin is too fast to capture in the sea--hopped up on a combination of freedom and crank--and are waiting for him to lounge around on land for a snooze before attempting to capture him.

"In the event that you see a penguin on the loose, please let us know and don't run after it or try to catch it," the park said in a release.

He's believed to be armed with cuteness and extremely dangerous when waddling.
