Person asks the New York Times: Can squirrels enjoy the colors of fall?

High five! We're color blind!

In the middle of autumn, I know when a squirrel streaks across the sidewalk in a ball of fury, leaping onto a side of a tree, and clicks its throat at me in anger--the first thing I'm wondering is, "Yeah, but do you appreciate the red coming off this maple? It's stunning!"

Someone wrote into the New York Times to ask just that very concern. Do squirrels actually realize trees are changing color, or are they just painfully ignorant about it all?

Turns out the bushy-tailed little acorn bully is very similar in sight to your average color blind human. He can see color changes, but greens and reds sort of blend together.

So, no, they don't appreciate the red coming off that maple. But those yellow oaks? Even a squirrel is in awe.
