Pablo Neruda didn't die of cancer. He was assasinated by lethal injection from right-wing Chilean military commandos.

See what just happened right there? Pablo Neruda finally became interesting.

According to Neruda's former chauffeur, Manuel Araya, Neruda was diagnosed with prostate cancer, but cancer didn't kill the poet, assassins did.

As the story goes, Neruda was in the hospital for cancer treatments when General Augusto Pinoche led a military coup of the Chilean government. Being a member of the communist party, Neruda was at odds with the right-wing coup. Twelve days into said coup d'état, Neruda planned to go into exile the very next day (per the chauffeur's story), and curiously died before he could beat feet out of the country.

Now, after years of building speculation, a Chilean judge has ordered Neruda's body exhumed, with tests conducted to determine if he was killed.

In other news, I wish I was poet with a chauffeur.
